The new year of the Cambodian is marked by the sun entering the sign of Aries. This event was closely related to the Vernal Equinox. Like New Year festival, Khmer New Year is rituals and full of tradition. The 3 days of celebration each have their own name and associated traditions:
Maha Songkran (The first day)
The first day of festival
The first day of the New Year is called "Maha Songkran". Like to the Tamil tradition, it is believed that was the day of creation. In Khmer tradditon, the world was created by God's to welcome the angels , people may be clean their houses and then illuminate them with candles. Families will have place an idol of Buddha on an altar.

The second day of festival
Also known as Wanabat, the second day of Khmer is a time to think of the less fortunate. People offer helping the poor, homeless and servants. Families can be go to monasteries to pay respect to their ancestors, and it is a time for family members to exchange gifts together.

The last day of the festival
On the last day of New Year celebrations Buddhists clean and wash statues of Lord Buddha with scented water. This cleansing is done to ensure that Cambodia will receive the most of the water it needs in the coming year.
